Republic P-47 & North American P-51.
By October of '44, Squadron 350 of the 353re Fighter Group had been in action over the ETO for fourteen months, flying their Republic P-47 "'Thunderbolts" on bomber escort missions, then pioneering ground support techniques in anticipation of their D-Day roll over the Normandy Beachhead. The transition to P-51 "Mustangs" meant goodbye to the tough old "jugs" that could give and take plenty of punishment and still come back over the Cliffs of Dover in proper military formation!
